Back to The Docks (We The Wire Season Two)

My main issue with this season has been how so many pillars of the show—Kima, McNulty, Avon, Omar—have crumbled completely with little to no forewarning. In Kima’s case, she’s just become an empty shell, unable to hold up the weight that she has in  the past. Omar’s reaction (and demise) is real life, but they did very little to explain why Omar would lose his wits and self-preservation instinct so quickly. This is a dude that lived in the shadows and never lost his cool—even when his lover was murdered and humiliated. I know he loved Butchie, but still.

The Sun storyline isn’t so rushed to me, mainly because they haven’t deemed it necessary to take us into these guys’ interior lives, save for that one scene where Gus is at home. The problem is in how they’ve failed to utilize the guys we’ve come to love to any significant degree (Carver, Herc, Bubbles, the DA chick, Daniels, the Greek—heck, even Valcheck!), totally ignored others (Colvin, Prez, Naymond) and failed to introduce anyone who’s truly captivating (S2: Brother Muzone, S3: Marlo, S4: The Boys). They spread things out precisely when they should have been tightening up and bringing closure to some of these characters.

I’m just glad I get to hear Clay Davis say “sheeeeeeiiiiit” about once an episode.

And I’m hoping that McNulty catches a bullet just so that Kima and Bunk can be some real police (read: go buck the fuck wild).
